Anatma

Ivar:
Namaskar, Guruji. Can you elaborate what is Atma?

Kowsiga:
Anything that is not anatma is Atma.

Ivar:
What is anatma?

Kowsiga:
Anatma is made of three:

  1. Threefold body
  2. Fivefold layers of human personlities
  3. Three state of experiences.

All these three put together is anatma.

Ivar:
What are the three types of bodies?

Kowsiga:

  1. Gross body – this is the body visible to the world; knowns as sthula sareeram and made up  of five elements.
  2. Subtle body – this is the invisible energy behind hand, leg, eyes etc that make the body function
  3. Casual body – this is the karana sareeram

Ivar:
How is the gross body made?  Why do we need it?

Kowsiga:
Gross body is made of five elements:

  1. Space (Akasa)
  2. Air (Vayu)
  3. Fire (Agni)
  4. Water (Jalam)
  5. Earth (Prithvi)

Our past karma (our actions in past and present life) determines the shape and nature of the physical body. The function of the gross body is to provide temporary residence for life (jiva)

Ivar:
How is subtle body different from gross body?  What is subtle body?

Kowsiga:
Gross body is visible to everyone, but subtle body is not visible .  Subtle body pervades visible gross body. Subtle body is also made up the same five elements as gross body, but subtle, invisible elements of body.  Subtle body is the energy behind eyes that gives eyesight; the energy behind ears that gives hearing;   Similar to gross body, our past karma determines the nature of subtle body.

Ivar:
What is causal body?

Kowsiga:
Causal body is more difficult to understand and requires the knowledge of Vedanta.  As we progress in our pursuit of Vedanta, I will elaborate more.

Causal body is the source of gross and subtle body and it is also the seed of universe.  There is no cause for causal body; it is the root cause of everything and known by other names like Maya.
